In the world of bad deals, this deal will forever be at the top of the list.
In exchange for a few dozen people, many of whom are already dead, the Israelis are going to be releasing hundreds of convicted murderers/terrorists, all of whom, you can bet your last nickel, will be back on the streets within a week, picking up where they left off.
In the long run, israel will almost certainly suffer thousands of new casualties in exchange for those few dozen people.
Is it any wonder that Hamas and their supporters are dancing in the street and declaring “victory?”
Who, among those in the civilized world, can possibly consider this a good and acceptable deal?
You can disagree with Biden, but for eight months he has declined to force Netanyahu to accept this deal, and immediately before that he spent a lot of political capital on getting $15 billion in military aid to Israel -- a package Trump openly opposed, and Vance and Rubio voted against.
Trump also was totally silent on the decapitation of Hezbollah, openly supported Hezbollah's candidate for President of Lebanon, and seemed to regret the removal of Assad from power. Trump has given us plenty of reason to suspect him and those who are shocked that he forced this deal on Netanyahu need to look at their ability to judge character.
Yesterday morning after services I chatted with three Trump voters about the deal. (They are a minority in my community.) Two are now ex-Trump supporters. The other still thinks this might work out. I hope that that still-supporter of Trump is right. But I am not optimistic.
The Trump Administration will probably crash and burn because most of his policies are horrible, from tax cuts for the rich, to deporting needed labor, to tariffs on imports, to threatening war with friendly countries while kowtowing to enemies. My concern is that the Democratic Party may be taken over by the far left. Americans seem to like the populist nonsense. As the Stealers Wheel song goes, "Clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right."
"Marco Rubio as Secretary of State was a sign that Trump was going to stand solidly in support of Israel."
Rubio had until 2024 been a huge reliable supporter of Israel. Then, last April, he kowtowed to Trump and voted against the Ukraine-Israel-Taiwan aid bill. He did not have to do that as his political status in Florida is strong and he isn't up for re-election until 2028. Florida is definitely a pro-Israel state and Rubio's general election opponents have all been supporters of Israel (sadly, not something that is always the case among Democrats today). Rubio sold out.
Laura, thanks for the rant. The quote about Bibi is hard to believe. Like I said, Trump haters (I couldn’t stand him on tv and was a DeSantis guy til the end.) Also, according to your guy Biden this plan was made last May. He wanted it on his resume. That’s all, it would have passed Trump or no Trump. Even DeSantis would have had to accept that he had not lpresident and had no power.
BTW, Netanyahu has not signed off yet and plans can be “massaged.” Is there something in the plan that says if Hamas regains power that the IDF could then wipe them out? And, it would be “no more mister nice guy” if they have to go again.
A big part of Trump’s support is from Evangelical Christians who hear about Israel every Sunday. We support Netanyahu and Israel strongly.
Though Trump is his own worst enemy, he has had constant negative news with an agenda to wipe him out. Then comes the Kangaroo courts from the left and our own judiciary. We now have a chance to change the system in the Middle East if only a smidgeon. I bet you a dollar it will be okay. Wait three months. Are you in the US?
One can dislike DeSantis for a lot of reasons, but he would be better on foreign policy than Trump. So would have most (not all) of the various Republican primary opponents who ran against Trump in 2016, 2020, and 2024. (Rand Paul, who ran in 2016, would have been worse.)
Unfortunately, foreign policy is no longer a relevant issue for today's Republican base. The dominant position for most of the base today is isolationist.
Anti isolationism but pro blaming America for not dealing with Israel satisfactorily. If we were isolated we wouldn’t be supporting Israel at all. What is your main propaganda, oops I mean news?
If you want more help maybe our Jewish population here should quit voting for leftists and Marxists like Kamala Harris who got over 70% of the Jewish vote. It is a disgrace. She hates Israel imo and she backs the JDCA which is anti Israel often. Kamala is “entirely supportive” of restricting sales of weapons to Israel.
Sounds like you two are an ultra liberal act. But the US saw through the ridiculous lawsuits, the tds filled media and two assignation attempts all in an effort to keep the left being exposed. Stay tuned. I am very pro-Israel and most Republicans are too. You won’t see us marching for Hamas. If you don’t think that was from Marxists you aren’t paying attention. It comes from universities who teach your brand of leftist ideology. Do you think it’s more likely that people come out of University with a love for Israel or hatred of Israel? That is so obvious but you support the Marxist Universities? Come on man! Said one more time for your boy Biden, the creepy cadaver.
Greenfield loves to cherrypick. In addition to the Bronx, Harris also won mostly orthodox Jewish Teaneck NJ with 58% of the vote. Harris won the Jewish areas of Westchester County, NY. Harris won big in mostly Jewish Sharon Massachusetts, and the orthodox Jewish Atlanta suburb of Toco Hills. Harris won big in the the Jewish areas of Montgomery County MD and the Jewish suburb of Pikesville, just outside of Baltimore. Harris also won in Skokie, IL, just north of Chicago. Except for Teaneck this is from maps, and I don't have time to add up all the election districts.
Some of the NY areas he mentioned have been voting Republican for a long time.
My Jewish neighborhood voted over 70% for Harris, as it had voted over 70% for Biden. The term "Donald Trump" frequently appears with the term "moral degenerate" in conversation here.
Did you flunk political science 101? Harris is no Marxist! She has taken lots of grief in her political career in San Francisco for being a supporter of Israel and for her longstanding ties to AIPAC. (And if you think AIPAC is anti-Israel, YOU are a problem.)
And it is a disgrace that the moral degenerate Trump got even a single vote from any religious person. It was 100% predictable that Trump would sell out Israel. I do admit that I didn't think it would happen even before he was inaugurated. Trump should be in the Big House not the White House but a soft on crime judge in NYC decided against giving him any jail time.
So was the father of the new President of Mexico. But she is no Marxist, either. I am not the one who isn't thinking clearly here. You either don't understand Marxism, or never looked at Harris's record, or both.
Craig, yes its the same plan conceived of from last May but was rejected by Israel at the time. It was not going to go into effect had Trump not strongarmed Bibi into accepting it when it was rehashed. You cannot convince me that Bibi suddenly relented to a powerless administration on its way out the door.
Netanyahu himself said that he was being forced into this by Trump. Are you calling Netanyahu a liar? Biden never forced Netanyahu into anything, and Harris wouldn't, either.
Where did he say that. He is not a liberal pussy, so I don’t believe it plus you need to see someone about your tds that skews reality. Neither of those lawsuits would have charged the average person. Exaggerating your property value? Doesn’t everyone do that? And the judge undervalued it by 5O0 million. A five acre lot with both seafronts like Maralago sold for $105 million. The judge claimed the value was $18 mil.
Please don’t respond without giving me a quote about Bibi saying Trump forced him. It’s called influence. I am against it. The two have the same idea how this will unfold . We don’t. Let it play out. Check back in 6-12 months. See where Hamas is. They will be weaker than today and Trump will see to it or die trying.
Biden is NOT my guy! As for the quote about Bibi, please read carefully. I made clear that Trump did NOT make that quote, it was said by Jeffery Sachs in a video that Trump posted on Truth Social.
The largest evangelical Christian church in the US is the Southern Baptist Convention and they spend millions every year trying to convert Jews to Christianity.
So? What is wrong with that? People need to see all angles. Many Jewish people are Messianic Jews who continue with Jewish customs and believe Jesus is the Messiah. Real Christians support Israel. The leftist churches don’t. Let’s see. Who hates Jews? Southern Baptists or leftists in academia. 90% of political contributions given by you and your Marxist bros goes to the Democrats who are indistinguishable from Marxists at this point.
Sell the Subaru, drop the Mother Jones subscription, quit getting giddy when you carry your hemp grocery bag in your man purse to the supermarket. Then someone will listen to your nonsense. Academia needs reforming. Anyone who supports students advocating for terrorists is not qualified to teach anything. You are with the party of anarchy. And if you let it happen while cowering to the reprobates who run most universities you are the same as the protesters.
You immediately question my intelligence. I don’t question yours. Just your character.
Trump is not in office. Biden is. USA under both Biden and previously, O’Bama is and has been hostile to Israel, instead favouring Iran. Their policies and approach to Israel, when in office, reveal this obvious fact. Conversely, Trump has always been a close Israel ally. He moved the USA Embassy to Jerusalem. He produced the Abraham Accords to promote peace in the region and those Accords have held today. Trumps son in law is Jewish. Some of Trumps grandchildren are Jewish. Trump remains a strong ally of Israel. Biden said publicly that he authored the deal. Are you calling Biden a liar? You want to do yet another smear job on Trump? Lol! You’ll have to do better than that.
How many times do I have to explain the obvious to people. Bibi resisted Biden’s demands for over a year, yet we are to believe that a powerless Biden on his way out the door was suddenly able to force Bibi to capitulate"? In addition to that its been widely reported that Trump’s Mideast envoy Witkoff was in Israel having “conversations” i.e. strongarming Bibi to accept the “ceasefire”/surrender deal. Open your eyes. About Trump’s son in law, Trump’s son in law by his daughter Tiffany is an Arab from Lebanon whose father is tied to hezbollah.
Biden would never strongarm a friendly country the way Trump does. He is a Franklin Roosevelt Democrat who believed (and proved during WW2) that being a good neighbor brings better results than bullying. It is because of FDR's "good neighbor" policy in Latin America that no country in the Western Hemisphere joined the Axis during WW2, and that both Brazil and Mexico actually fought on the side of the good guys. (Mexico also made a humongous non-miliary contribution as well.) Compare to Woodrow Wilson invading Mexico twice in the 1910s, almost resulting in Mexico entering WW1 on the side of Germany. (Mexico only decided not to because it didn't think that Germany would be of much help to it in getting rid of the US invasion force.)
Yes, Biden has been known to lie. He wants to take credit because he perversely thinks its a good thing. Trump is also praising the deal. Wake the hell up. You only see in Trump what you want to see and refuse to accept you’ve been hoodwinked.
Biden lied about being a free trader, too. Trying to be Trump Light isn't a winning strategy. He should have removed all of Trump's tariffs on day one in office.
However, Biden did provide US intelligence information to Israel to help decapitate Hezbollah, and did use US military assets to attack the Houthis and to defend against the Iranian rockets. And his military aid program to Ukraine and Israel is why Hezbollah is weaker than it ever has been -- with Biden arranging a defeat for the pro-Hezbollah candidate in Lebanon's Presidential election. The aid to Ukraine is why Assad will spend his retirement in Moscow.
Not just now, but early in 2024, when Trump tried to kill Biden's military aid program. Fortunately Mike Johnson defied Trump and brought it to votes in the House of Representatives -- a rare example of a Republican leader showing a backbone against Trump these days -- but Vance and Rubio voted against the aid. And more recently, Trump tried to get the pro-Hezbollah candidate elected President of Lebanon. Biden helped to foil that.
Obama and Kerry ended Iran's nuclear weapons program. Trump greenlighted it by killing the Obama-Kerry program. Biden (with Moynihan) tried to get Reagan, and then Bush, to move the embassy to Jerusalem, but the two Republicans refused. The Abraham Accords weren't a bad thing, but they were only implemented in two small countries, Bahrain and United Arab Emirates, that were never at war with Israel. Sudan never implemented them, and Morocco was a separate deal, is too far away, and came at the cost of legitimizing a hostile takeover of a neighboring country. Trump also has a Lebanese son in law whose family is close to Hezbollah and Trump tried to make Hezbollah's candidate the President of Lebanon. (Biden prevented that from happening.) Some of Biden's grandchildren are Jewish, as is Harris's spouse. Biden has a 52 year record of support for Israel; Trump may have been a supporter in the past but that ended in 2024.
"It was Trump who actually made the deal with the taliban to facilitate our withdrawal."
Actually, most of the US troops were withdrawn by Trump before Biden took office. Only 2,500 were left for Biden to try to defend many US assets, from 8,000. It was a military disaster. Biden's only other option was to attempt to re-escalate against a Taliban that was energized by its added terrorists whom Trump had gotten released from prison with demoralized Afghan allies who had been betrayed. Another complication was that the only way to even GET US troops to Afghanistan was via Pakistan, which at that time had a horribly anti-US Prime Minister, Imran Khan. He had agreed to the release of the Talibans from Pakistani prisons and was unlikely to be willing to facilitate tens of thousands of US troops ferried through Pakistan. Khan congratulated the Afghan Taliban for their victory over the US. Khan has since been forced from office and convicted of numerous crimes, the most recent being earlier today. Unlike convicted felon Trump, Khan is actually in prison now. And Khan's successor Shehbaz Sharif doesn't seem to hate the US.
You may continue your delusions. Biden has had some problematic foreign policies, such as the continuation of Trump's tariffs, his excessive concern for how the IDF is executing a war, and his blocking the Japanese takeover of US Steel (which may result in US Steel ceasing to exist). But he has been 100% supportive of Israel's actions against Hezbollah, actually had the US military engage Iranian missiles and proxies, continued US support for Ukraine which made it impossible to save Assad, and (two actual miracles) gotten Sweden and Finland into NATO. Biden has repaired relations with friendly countries and sent aid to countries threatened by Chinese hegemony (another thing Trump tried to block). Biden also supports forcing the sale of the Chinese Communist propaganda vehicle TikTok even as Trump wants to save it because one of his big donors who is a major investor in TikTok. Trump has long shown that he absolutely can not ever be relied upon. Just ask the Afghans and the Kurds.
There is so much inaccuracy in your silly comments that I dont know where to start. Particularly, your innaccurate statement about Biden support for Israel being 100%. False. Exhibit A was his efforts to prevent the IDF from entering Rafah, where the found and eliminated Sinwar finally. Also, Biden withheld precision weapons from the IDF during the Rafah mission that only exascerbated the inevitable civilian casualtites that occurred there. There was more nonsense in your comments, but my finger is tired.
You obviously did not read my comment: "he has been 100% supportive of Israel's actions against Hezbollah".
"Biden withheld precision weapons from the IDF "
Had Trump had his way there would have been no weapons to withhold. The IDF would have had to stand down. There would have been no operations against Hezbollah. Assad would still be in Syria and Hezbollah's guy -- a childhood friend of Trump's daughter's father in law -- would be President of Lebanon. I am willing to criticize Biden when he deserves it -- and I even mentioned several criticisms in the very comment you responded to -- but you are excusing Trump for the inexcusable.
It is not me who you have to convince that Bidens support for Israel is rock solid, considering that he has been playing both sides against the middle in order to placate the Squad wing of his own party from day one. It is Israel who you have to convince. Considering how elated they are about Trumps return to the WH, I doubt that you will be successful in that endeavor.
In the world of bad deals, this deal will forever be at the top of the list.

It isn't the WORST deal ever. Munich 1938 comes to mind immediately. But I am having difficulty trying to come up with another one.

Trump conned Israelis, too. Trump was no different from the Squad regarding the military aid package.
How would you possibly know that, considering that Oct.7 and the war that followed that horrible day all happened while Biden was in the WH?
